Increasingly, we are seeing a trend of students staying Hong Kong as it is not financially viable to move overseas. There are a range of options available to students, the most important thing to note is international students are considered “non-JUPAS students”. These are students who have undertaken the International Baccalaureate, Advanced Placement AP, A-Level etc. 

For those who have undertaken the International Baccalaureate, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) offer full scholarships to those who have achieved a mark of 44 and above, as long as the student has applied to HKU. Similarly, those who achieve 5 A* in 1 academic year are eligible for a full scholarship. 

Likewise, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University offers HKD $50,000 scholarship if they receive 5 A* in their A Levels in one academic year or HKD $65,000 for students who receive a mark of 45 on their International Baccalaureate. There is no scholarship application required, but students must apply for their course at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. 

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) also offer full tuition to those who achieve full marks of 45 in their International Baccalaureate, at least 3 A* in A Level subjects and those studying AP if they have a SAT score of SAT Reasoning Test >= 1530 or ACT >= 34 and No. of AP subjects with Grade 5 is 4 are eligible for scholarships as long as they apply in the main window.

There are also sport scholarships available at the University of Hong Kong and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) for those talented and criteria is based on sportsman/sportswoman achievements. CUHK offer up to HKD$80,000 tuition discount for potential students.

Applications for local universities open in September, main round applications are in February with late applications being accepted up until June of the year before the student starts at the university. 

There are also a variety of different scholarships available that are sponsored by individuals and corporates including the Hong Kong Jockey Club, Charles Kao Foundation, Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowship, YK Pao Foundation etc.
