The importance of taking examinations such as IELTS and PTE and using it to apply to universities

IELTS benefits

– Recognised world-wide
– Can be used for study and migration purposes
– Gives you choice to be able to do a test paper as opposed to on the computer
– Simple scoring – there’s an individual test score, anyone scoring above 7 is a proficient user of English

PTE benefits

– Quick exam results
– Universally accepted, but not widely recognised
– Computer based
– AI based scoring system

For universities, both IELTS and PTE are accepted, although IELTS is widely preferred as it has more long-standing reputation

What is the risk of doing PTE as opposed to IELTS?

IELTS has both paper as well as computer-based papers but does require for the speaking part for the candidate to interact with a human. The PTE has computer-based papers and the speaking component can be done via the computer. There is also a risk that with PTE using an AI based scoring system that the scores are not as accurate as the IELTS.

It is important to note that IELTS Is still marked by a human whereas the PTE relies on the unconscious bias of a computer. Students should not be overly reliant on AI and be careful of misinformation. It is also important that students should not take tests on behalf of other students.

Universities use this information from these assessments to evaluate whether students meet the eligibility criteria for their course.
