Choosing the right university in an ever-changing world, your first degree is not always the one you will graduate with.

We live in an ever-changing world, where we have so many courses choices whether its a Business, Arts, Science, Engineering, Computer Science degree. The statistics show that most 17, 18 year old do not know (approx. 80% of students) graduate from high school and have no clue what university course they wish to study. Some choose to take a gap year, others choose to defer their course date, some enter the workforce and come into the university as a mature age student.

Take for example our founder, she started out in Australia being accepted into a Bachelor of Teaching/IT course before realising that would make her a mathematics and science teacher, which she did not want to do. She then switched to a Bachelor of Arts in politics and international studies. After a year of studying sociology, international relations and politics, she realised she wanted to a Bachelor of Education, all this before she turned 19!

Ultimately, she was able to take the credit from the course that she did in the previous year and was able to have less of a study load for two semesters.

In Australia, yes that does mean you can go to university for 2 full days a week and then have the rest of the week off. Australia’s lifestyle means you can study and also have a work-life balance by working on a part time basis.

Not only that, in our founders cohort, out of our original cohort only 5 of us are still in the teaching profession, the rest of us have gone on to work in education, albeit not in a classroom. Some of us running our own business, in politics, education consulting etc.

We ask those of reading the blog these questions

• Do you have an interest in helping people? In which case have a look at social work, counselling, psychology etc

• Perhaps you have an interest in running a business, a business course in marketing or tourism maybe for you

• Are you curious about the scientific mind? Maybe chemistry, physics is for you.

• Do you love video games? Perhaps a course in computer science might suit you

Regardless of what course you decide, what you choose first does not have to be your final degree.
