Many people are unaware of what a scholarship is, or how to go about applying for one. Most families are also unaware that international schools have an obligation as a condition of their land lease to provide scholarships and bursaries to the less fortunate. “Not less than ten percentage of the school’s total fee income to provide scholarships or financial assistance to the less fortunate”.
Students can have a talent and apply for a scholarship. This could be a music, art, drama or sport (football, basketball, tennis etc.) Most scholarships require the student to audition, provide a portfolio of their past awards before deciding if the scholar can be admitted to the school. Families will also be asked to share their financial assets and maybe provided with a partial scholarship or a full scholarship.
A recent example that we can use is a student at American School Hong Kong was granted a scholarship. For her, we submitted videos of her singing, videos of her in the Voice Philippines, certificates of her singing competition. The school then asked her to perform in front of the Head of Music. After her parents provided financial details, the school granted her a 100% scholarship.
People ask the question also is there an age limit on applying for scholarships. This depends on the school – some kindergartens and primary schools offer financial assistance and bursaries.
We have 2 students at Guidepost Montessori on full scholarships and another 1 student at Oxbridge School on a partial bursary, which means they pay some fees every month.
However, most international schools prefer to accept scholarship and bursary applications from the age of 10-16, in time for students to join secondary school.
