Choosing between two good international schools comes down to which is the right school where your child can be happy, supported and challenged at an appropriate level.
Start with your “why”
Revisit why these two schools made your shortlist in the first place – was it the community feel, curriculum, language, track record, fees, or location.
Remember that a big name or prestige label does not automatically mean it is the best environment for your child’s personality, interests or needs.
Look beyond the brochure
Talk to current parents about academic expectations, homework load, communication with teachers and how the school handles issues like bullying.
Attend open days or community events to see how students and staff interact in real life and whether you sense a community feel.
Key questions to ask
Curriculum and pathways: IB, A‑Level and other – where do graduates typically go for secondary or university?
Practicalities: campus location, transport, school hours, fees and debentures, and how long the school has been established.
Language and culture: importance of Chinese (traditional vs simplified), diversity of the student body and how strongly the school values bilingualism or global citizenship.
Whole child: class sizes, learning support, extension programs and how the school looks after student wellbeing and mental health.
Match school to your child
Think honestly about where your child struggles or shines – do they need more structure, more support, or more room to explore – and whether each school can offer that.
If you are choosing a primary school, remember that this does not lock in your child’s entire educational future; you can always review again for secondary in a few years time
Trust your instincts as a parent
Align school values with your family’s values by asking about inclusivity and community expectations.
After doing your research and asking questions, trust that you know your child best and that choosing the school where they are most likely to feel safe and supported is the right decision for your family.
