A psycho-educational assessment is a form of assessment undertaken by educational psychologists to determine whether a child has developmental learning needs, social-emotional concerns, strengths and areas of growth. It is by no means a diagnosis that my child has Special Educational Needs (SEN) i.e. autism, ADHD or similar, but rather a way to identify if there are learning challenges, developmental delays etc. and is used to make a personalised individual plan, which can be used at home and at school.
These assessments often include academic ability, standardised testing, executive function, behaviour issues observations, intellectual functioning observations and involve the psychologist also observing the child in their school environment and asking their teachers to write observations and concerns that they may see on a regular basis as well as a detailed interview with the child’s parents.
Based on that a report is generated which will show how the child compares to other children of a similar age and recommendations are made on how to best support them.
These assessments can cost anywhere from HKD $7,000 – $30,000.
