VET/Associate degrees as an alternative means to entering university

Vocational Education and Training (VET) can be a practical pathway into university and a quicker route into the job market for many Hong Kong students.

What is VET and how does it link to university?
Many students overseas take vocational courses alongside school qualifications (for example BTEC Higher Nationals in Business, IT or Engineering), then use those credits to enter the second year of a related degree or to strengthen their university applications.

In Australia, VET is delivered by TAFEs and registered training organisations and is designed to be hands‑on, with clear pathways from Certificates I–IV into Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas and then university “credit transfer” or packaged diploma‑to‑degree options.

Popular VET options for international students
Common VET areas include commercial cookery, early childhood education and care, automotive, engineering, business, IT and community services (aged care, disability, youth work, etc.).

Courses typically range from a few months to 2–3 years, depending on the level, and focus on the practical skills and competencies needed in the Australian job market.

Entry requirements and affordability
VET qualifications are outcome‑based and very practical, often with lower tuition fees than university degrees; many providers quote annual fees in the range of about AUD 6,000–15,000 depending on the course and campus.

English entry is usually more accessible than for direct university entry, with many VET programs accepting an overall IELTS score of around 5.5 for international students (sometimes with minimum band scores).

Providers and student experience
Well‑known public providers include TAFE Queensland, TAFE NSW, Box Hill Institute and South Metropolitan TAFE in Western Australia, alongside reputable private colleges such as Trinity Institute (Australia) and Pacific College of Technology.

These institutions often bundle orientation, learning support, career services and pathway advice to help students move from VET into further study or employment.

Why VET can be a smart alternative
VET students gain real workplace skills and experience that can lead directly to employment, apprenticeships or higher‑level study, and many courses are aligned to occupations on Australia’s skilled occupation lists.

Research shows VET graduates often find jobs faster and can have starting salaries comparable to or even higher than many recent university graduates, underlining that a vocational route can be just as powerful as a purely academic one.
