At this time of year, many parents are preparing applications for preschool, primary, or secondary school. One of the biggest decisions is whether to choose a through-train school—where a child can continue from kindergarten or primary through to secondary—or a stand-alone kindergarten or primary school.

Hong Kong has a wide range of international school options, with schools offering different entry points, curricula, languages, fee structures, and school cultures. As of March 2026, Hong Kong has 53 international schools offering a range of non-local curricula, including British, American, Australian, Canadian, French, German, Singaporean, and International Baccalaureate programme. 

Why parents choose through-train schools

Many parents prefer through-train schools because of the convenience and continuity they provide. Once a child has secured a place in kindergarten or Year 1, parents do not need to go through another competitive admissions process at the next stage—although families should always check each school’s policy.

Through-train schools are often larger communities, sometimes with 1,000 to 2,000 students across all year levels. They can offer consistent curriculum, familiar teachers and routines, long-term friendships, and a clearer pathway through to Grade 12 or Year 13. For families who value stability and want to reduce the pressure of applying again for secondary school, this can be very appealing.

The advantages of primary-only schools

Primary-only schools can offer a very different experience. Because they focus on younger children, they may provide smaller communities, more individualised attention, and a strong focus on foundational learning, wellbeing, and age-appropriate experiences.

Older primary students may also have opportunities to take on leadership roles, participate in experiential learning, and enjoy more visibility within the school community. Some children thrive in this smaller, more nurturing environment.

The main consideration is future planning. Families at primary-only schools often begin exploring secondary options from Year 4 onwards, particularly if they are targeting a competitive Year 7 entry point. This can feel stressful, but it also gives families flexibility to reassess their child’s interests, academic strengths, language development, and social needs before committing to a secondary school.

Pathways and partnerships

Several primary-only schools have established links, partnerships, or progression pathways to secondary schools. Examples include Anfield International School, Kingston International School, HKCA Primary School, International College Hong Lok Yuen, Norwegian International School, and Shrewsbury International School.

However, parents should always confirm the details of any pathway. A “feeder” relationship or priority pathway does not necessarily mean every child is guaranteed a place. Admissions criteria, availability, requirements can still apply.

Which option is best?

There is no simple answer. A through-train school is not automatically better than a stand-alone primary school, and a smaller primary school is not necessarily less ambitious.

Some children flourish in a large, established school where they can stay with the same community for many years. Others benefit from a smaller setting with individual attention, then gain confidence from moving to a new secondary school at the right time.
