A gap year in Australia can be more than just a break from study — it can be a valuable year of growth, exploration, and practical experience.

A gap year is usually taken after high school, when a student is still deciding what they want to do next and wants to explore the world while gaining life experience.

Australia is a popular destination for students from many countries around the world, including China, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Nepal, France, and the UK. It is chosen for its great outdoor lifestyle, strong opportunities to find work in hospitality, and the chance to meet students from many different countries. With experiences ranging from the rural outback to vibrant cities and beautiful beaches, Australia is ideal for those seeking adventure.

Some students come to Australia on a 417 Working Holiday visa, while others arrive to take short courses, study hospitality, do farm work, or simply travel and explore.

A gap year can be a great opportunity for students to build confidence, independence, and real-world experience. It can also help them gain a clearer sense of direction for their future study or career path.

Things to consider

Visa requirements

Every country has different visa rules, so it is important to understand what is allowed and what is not. For example, 417 Working Holiday visa holders may work for the same employer for up to six months and may need to complete 88 days of farm work depending on their plans for a second Working Holiday visa. Student visa holders must also follow work restrictions, which currently limit them to 40 hours per fortnight during study periods.

Please note this is current as of date of publication. However, this is subject to change as Australian legislation changes often and this information is of a general nature. For specific information relating to your Australian visa situation, contact our MARN advisor Jessica Yuen (MARN: 2117701) to discuss specific visa advice.

Budget

It is important to consider how much the gap year will cost. Will the student be renting an apartment? What will their living expenses be? Planning a realistic budget is essential before making any commitments.

Insurance

In Australia, many temporary visa holders are required to have Overseas Visitor Health Cover (OVHC). It is important to check the insurance requirements that apply to the specific visa type.
