The birth rate is declining, kindergartens are closing. Yet, the news reports that ESF is opening 3 kindergartens – ESF Renaissance College Kindergarten (Sai Sha), Quarry Bay School Kindergarten (Kornhill) and West Kowloon.  Strategically, this is to the advantage of those looking for “through-train” schools. Sai Sha will align with Renaissance College, Kornhill will provide places at Quarry Bay School (Primary) and South Island (Secondary) and West Kowloon will serve Clearwater Bay and Kennedy School. As parents will not have to look for another school once their child is admitted at K1 and is guaranteed places at primary and secondary school. Existing students at ESF Tung Chung will be relocated to ESF Renaissance College Kindergarten in 2026.

As SCMP quoted 3 kindergartens have already indicated they will close and last year 23 kindergartens shut down. This is due to the dip in the number of births, financial pressures on kindergartens, high rent and low student enrolment.

However, ESF have chosen to open three kindergartens in popular, high demand areas in Hong Kong and providing parents with options from K1 right through to Y13. If anything, it proves that the international school market continues to evolve. With any international school and their governance, it comes down to how the school evolves and strategically plans over a 5- or 10-year period, to ensure continued success.
